Day #4 NYC
On Saturday we were able to hang out with Julia and Will. We took the subway to the lower east side and had brunch at Freeman’s Alley. It is a great little restaurant tucked at the end of a alley. Trever had poached eggs with cheesy grits and I had skillet eggs with bacon, gruyere and spinach. We also ordered bacon which Trever swears is the best bacon he has ever tasted. The blueberry lemonade was also delicious.
Since I wasn't able to get a mani/pedi on Friday (sigh), Julia put her iPhone to work and found us a great Nail Salon in Alphabet City. The lady that took care of me was fabulous and the lower leg massage was perfect! We thought the mani/pedi's would take 1 hour but they ended up taking two, oops! While they were waiting the boys walked over to park on the East River. Looking south they could see the Brooklyn Navy Yards across the river. They also watched a little league baseball game and wandered through a flea market. They eventually sat outside the nail salon in the shade and patiently waited for us to be done.
We took a break from the heat and grabbed some ice cream at a nearby place. Trever had mango and avocado, and I had banana and hazelnut. It was really good ice cream and the perfect treat for a hot day.
We spent the rest of the evening getting ready for a Flash Mob. Yes, we participated in a Flash Mob and it was really fun. Items we needed included flashlights, glow sticks, masks, cameras, headphones and a black or white t-shirt. We all chose black so that we could be on the same team.
We were running short on time, so Will and Julia dropped us off while they parked the car. It took us a while to get our ipods timed up with the crowd but eventually we were on track. We followed instructions to the festival of lights and met with the white shirt team at park on the Hudson river. I have to say we were some of the oldest people there, although there were people older than us and they were pretty cool. At one point we were packed together like sardines and I thought, if these people get crazy I am in trouble. The people were pretty tame, and were just out to have a good time. Unfortunately we didn't meet up Will and Julia until after the event, but we were able to capture some fun pictures in our masks. I kept laughing because Trever's mask looked like it could be him, minus the uni brow.
Oh wait, there is more. We walked back to the car and drove to La Esquina for take out tacos. There were very tasty and left Trever begging for more. We ate in the car so that we could arrive at our next destination, Serendipity, before it got to late. It's usually a 45 minute wait at midnight but Julia has a trick where she stands inside the door rather than on the street and gets sat in half the time. It worked perfectly. We ordered a frozen hot chocolate, carrot cake and Broadway cake sundae. It was way too much food but it was delicious. We arrived home after 1 am and tired, happy and full.
